Banana in Sign Language
Bananas are a favorite snack for even the smallest little eater. Have some fun learning how to sign banana and watch your child ask for the treat again and again!1. Hold one hand up, pointer finger extended to the ceiling, the rest of the fingers tucked in (as if you were indicating the number one). This hand represents the banana.
2. With your other hand, reach up and pretend to peel the “banana” 2 – 3 times.
3. The sign should look just like you’re peeling a banana, so keep that visual in mind to help you remember how to make the sign.
Teaching Tips:
• When teaching baby sign language, be aware that this sign (and others!) takes quite a bit of dexterity. It is okay if your child signs an approximation (kind of like the signing equivalent of baby talk!) and doesn’t get it quite right at first. Just reinforce the correct formation by acknowledging the sign and echoing back while modeling the correct sign.
• The idea is always to model in a light manner, not make corrections. The right sign form will come in time – just like words!
• Learn a few more signs for different fruits. Then give your child a choice for snacks by signing each fruit and asking which they might like.
